What a lapsed registration costs a Houston HVAC shop

Every tech doing A/C work in Texas needs a TDLR technician registration or certification, and each one is valid for one year from the day it was issued. Registered techs renew for $20 and certified techs for $35; after it expires, the fee goes to 1.5 times within 90 days and 2 times up to 18 months.

The bigger risk is on the contractor. TDLR's penalty schedule lists $2,000 to $5,000 for using someone who isn't a registered or certified technician, and $1,000 to $3,500 for working on an expired license. A/C contractors also need 8 hours of continuing education to renew, including 1 hour of Texas law and rules.

Questions

How do I check if a Houston HVAC tech is licensed?

Enter the tech's TDLR registration number above, or switch to the name tab and search by name. Name searches start in Harris County; pick another county or All of Texas to widen it.

How long is a Texas A/C technician registration good for?

One year from the date it was issued. Registered technicians renew for $20 and certified technicians for $35.

Is this the official TDLR license search?

No. It reads TDLR's public license data, which the state publishes on the Texas Open Data Portal and updates regularly, so it can lag TDLR's own site by a few days. For an official record, use TDLR's license search.

How do the reminder emails work?

Pick a license, enter your email, and we'll email you 60, 30 and 7 days before it expires. Before each reminder we check TDLR again, so if the tech already renewed you won't get nagged. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe.

Can I track my whole crew instead of one license at a time?

Yes, that's what TradeShield does. Send us your roster (a spreadsheet or photos of the cards are fine) and we set it up. It checks every license against TDLR every morning and alerts the right people before anything lapses. $99/month flat, 7 days free.
